TAVARES -- Thousands of bees swarmed U.S. Highway 441 on Thursday morning after the truck transporting them was involved in a fatal five-car accident, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
Two paramedics who are allergic to bee stings remained inside their ambulance, and several motorists and deputies were stung as bees buzzed around the accident site.
The chain reaction started when a southbound pickup loaded with four beehives was rear-ended at about 8:40 a.m., Cpl. Daniel Bowden said. The truck crossed into oncoming traffic, hitting another car.
The passenger in the pickup, Merriel Thomas Peacock, 85, of Crescent City, was killed. The driver, Albert Mitchner, 55, also of Crescent City, was in stable condition at Orlando Regional Medical Center. Two others involved in the accident were taken to local hospitals.
